Team Melissa

Hello Friend!

Thank you for your interest in Team Melissa!! Whether you are a newcomer or old friend joining the team/donating or just curious at heart, I am grateful for your time. :)

For those of you who don't know, I was diagnosed with a rare form of Ovarian Cancer in Aug. 2012, just a few weeks after I turned 22. On Aug. 9th I had surgery at MGH and a few weeks later, on Aug. 27th, I started my first round of chemo. The walk is really important to me, this year in particular because it marks the 5th year since my diagnosis which, if you don't mind me saying, is a pretty big effing deal. I can't believe it’s been 5 years; 5 years since I agonized over losing my hair, 5 years since I had to deal with a pick line, since I had to worry about how people would act towards me, since I had to worry not only about the quality of my future, but its existence.

Honestly, I feel dramatic when I write that, but it’s the truth. I was lucky, like uncommonly and terrifically lucky. The rarity of my cancer actually worked in my favor. After my tumor was removed and basically everything in my abdominal cavity was biopsied, I learned that my cancer hadn't spread so I didn't need chemo if I didn't want it, and believe me I didn't want it. However, my age left me in his weird in between space, if I was any younger they would not have given me chemo, but if I was any older they definitely would have. Now, I don't know if you consider this an easy or difficult decision to make, but for me it was easy. I'd waited two weeks for my biopsy results and that was more than enough time to despair over my future. If getting chemo now meant that I didn't have to worry about cancer the next day, or week, or year after, then I'd do it. It also helped that I was backed by the best doctor ever!

It’s a scary thing to think about, the fact that you might not have as much time as your family and friends, especially when you are 22 and the possibilities are supposed to be endless. Again, I was extremely lucky, I only had to worry for two weeks and I had a great support system (shout-out to Mom, Dad, Michele, Brother & Katie, Marcela, Elizabeth, etc); I’d be lost without them. What’s not lost on me is that other women aren’t as lucky. Most aren’t diagnosed until they are much older and usually it’s too late. I wish every woman diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer had the same prognosis as I did, but that’s not the case which is why this walk is so significant!!!! Most people are in the dark when it comes to Ovarian Cancer and events like this shine a light on it!!

Thank you for helping me to spread awareness!!! Through your generosity we are making a difference for the women, family members, and loved ones affected by this disease.

Your support is appreciated!
