On Monday, March 5, 2012 my Mom, Tammy was diagnosed with Stage 3C ovarian cancer (later upgraded to Stage 4 when spots were found in her lungs). She had both of her ovaries removed, the omentum removed and a significant portion of her lower intestine removed to rid her of the cancerous tumors. She was surrounded by family as she went into surgery and she was surrounded by family as she awoke after surgery. In the course of one night I sent close to 200 text messages to friends and family near and far, updated Facebook repeatedly, and my mom asked about people by name to make sure they had all received notification. In the midst of the chaos, uncertainty and pain, my mom was surrounded by a physical representation of the greater support network that surrounded her as she began her battle with this terrible illness.
Mom fought valiantly for 3 years before she lost her battle on May 24, 2015, again surrounded by her many loved ones. She was a fierce activist for ovarian cancer research and funding, and she worked tirelessly to raise awareness for the disease, its symptoms, and treatment options. She dedicated the last 3 years of her life to this cause and wanted her fight to carry on.
On December 3, 2017, I invite you to continue the physical representation of support for Mom, and her fellow Teal Sisters, Laura Knaperek, and Gloria Schuler (as well as everyone still battling), as we walk to raise funds and awareness for ovarian cancer research and a CURE!
