Teresa our beautiful sister, friend, and loving daughter at the age of 29, passed away on August 27, 2011, just one year after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Teresa has touched so many of our lives, never giving up hope. Every day that goes by she is missed and the best way to honor her memory is to continue to raise awareness on Ovarian Cancer!
In women ages 35-74, ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths. An estimated one woman in 78 will develop ovarian cancer during her lifetime. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be over 22,280 new cases of ovarian cancer diagnosed this year and that more than 14,240 women will die from ovarian cancer this year. More research is needed to develop a test to diagnose ovarian cancer and find a cure before it's too late.
Teresa had experienced a lot of the common symptoms of ovarian cancer, which we had no idea even existed at the time: upset stomach, heartburn, feeling full quickly, bloating, and pelvic or abdominal pain. When she would go to the doctors, they would just treat the symptoms, suggesting she had GERD or Endometriosis. Until one day she was in such excruciating pain she had to be rushed the emergency room and that is when they diagnosed her with Stage 3c Ovarian Cancer (serous carcinoma – Grade 1). Please do not ignore the signs and do not let someone tell you it is nothing or that it will go away if your body is telling you it’s something.
On Saturday, September 26th we will unite across the country for Together in TEAL - No Boundaries! We’ll use our voices and actions during the weeks leading up to event day to turn our country TEAL from coast-to-coast by showcasing our activism! On September 26, kick off the day with an activity YOU CHOOSE. Run, walk, ride, skip, jump -- whatever gets you moving safely. Then come together with family, friends, and supporters and watch our online National Broadcast Celebration featuring stories and celebrating the accomplishments of our TEAL community.
You can show your support by joining or donating to Teresa’s Blue Butterflies. Thank You!
