Please help me support National Ovarian Cancer Coalition by making a contribution to my fundraiser and sharing this page with your family and friends.
My mother, PJ Gilmer, was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer in 2016. It came out of nowhere... she was rushed in to surgery for a blockage and 30 minutes after her surgery started, her surgeon came out to let me know he couldn’t perform the surgery. Mom had stage 4 cancer. Despite doctors appointments and good health in general, no one knew the cancer was taking over her abdomen. After months of chemo and another surgery, she was in remission. That time felt so great! She fought so hard, as she always did, showing incredible strength and will... and she won! We cherished our ‘bonus’ time with her.
Unfortunately, as cancer often does, it came back. It came back strong. Chemo, 2 months in the hospital, another procedure, a trip to the ICU, a stint at home, and then back to the hospital and hospice. As much strength as Mom had, as much will as she could muster, she could not overcome this challenge.
She passed in October 2019 at just 69 years old. Mom was the strongest woman I’ve ever known. She had a nickname growing up from the neighborhood kids. She was Peggy Jean, the ‘Mean Machine’. She was not someone to mess with. Not back when we were growing up or as she faced cancer two times. I admire the Mean Machine spirit she has always had in her.
My fiancé and I will be supporting this organization for a 2nd year to help further care, research and education of Ovarian cancer for women today and our children... and remembering the Mean Machine a little more on this day.
Every dollar I raise will advance National Ovarian Cancer Coalition's great cause! Additionally, you can ask me how you can get involved too.
Together, we can make a difference!
