Kevin Moore

It was Christmas 2009 that my mother complained of feeling bloated, feeling really full after she ate, lots of gas, and discomfort. "I just feel really tired," she said. She was always super active, so this was a weird thing for her to complain about. By the end of January, she said she felt exhausted. I encouraged her to go to the doctor who told her it was possible diverticulitis and constipation. Needless to say, within a week, she was on the bed grabbing her abdomen in severe pain. That was April 7th, 2010. I brought her to the emergency room and after her CT scan, the doctor came in and told us that it looked like ovarian cancer. After consulting with the cancer team, it was decided the best course of treatment was to debulk and treat. She was a healthy woman who took care of herself (she was 79), and the team suggested this would be the best route to go. She never left the hospital. On May 4th, 2010, just one month shy of diagnosis, and one month away from her 80th birthday, she passed away surrounded by her family. Before things turned, I was sitting next to her and she told me, "I don't think I'm going to make it through this. I need you to know something. I need you to know it's ok to let me go." I started crying and said, 'NO!! We're going to fight!! I'm going to be right here by your side and help you. You will get through this!" She told me, "Kevin, stop crying. I need you to know that - I am OK to go." I stopped crying. I said, "mom, I'm scared." She looked me dead in the eye and said, "Well, I'm not." I cannot tell you what went through me - it was as if her strength imploded into my cells and went through my entire body. I miss her more than one could possibly know.
She had all the telltale signs of ovarian cancer. For example, bloating, gas, felling full after small meals, gastric abnormality. This terrible cancer does all it's damage while you're not paying attention. The deadly silent whisperer. I am running with my beautiful husband and exceptional friends to raise money so that more research can be done to find a cure so that you don't have to have a story like mine. Thanks for taking the time to read. Please give whatever you can!!
