Sue Keely

My name is Sue Keely and I am a 4 year ovarian cancer survivor. I was diagnosed in April 2015.
This was not my family's first experience with ovarian cancer. My Aunt Nancy had been to the doctor for a bad cough and was being treated for bronchitis. She was rushed to the hospital when she couldn't catch her breath. This is when the cancer had been found and it was too late. The cancer had metastasized into her lungs and esophagus. She was gone the next day. That was 15 years ago this past February.

Fast forward to 2015, I couldn't catch my breath doing the same things I had done the day before. I went home and my Mom took me to get checked.

We started at Med Express with blood tests and x-rays. Then sent to Jameson Hospital about 6 blocks away by ambulance. The doctor told us I should be seen right away.

More blood taken, more x-rays and scans were done at Jameson. After what seemed like a very long time a doctor came in to see Mom and me. We were told that I had a mass on my abdomen and they could not treat me. I was then asked which women's hospital in Pittsburgh I wanted to go to for treatment.

I was transported to West Penn Hospital where all the testing began again. This is when I met my gynecological oncologist, Dr. Eileen Segreti. She was straight forward with everything that needed to be done. After each step was done I would ask her "What's next?".

When you go through a journey like this you really find out who you can count on. I leaned on my family quite a bit. They were with me every step. My church family were there with prayers, visits, and enough cards to fill a very large scrapbook. Friends and neighbors would check in to see it we needed anything.

The thing with ovarian cancer is there is no early detection test. By the time the symptoms show up it is already stage III or IV.

The NOCC is determined to raise money for research and to help survivors find quality of life.

Please help me support the NOCC. Together, we can make a difference.

Thank you for your support,
